Interior painting can be learned at home, and we can achieve spectacular results if we follow the necessary steps. However, it is worth paying attention to common mistakes.
Painting at home step by step! Let’s dive in!
The room painting and wallpapering are spectacular. For this reason, it is understandable if someone decides to do it at home. At the same time, the risk is also greater: if we make a mistake, it is difficult to explain it to our guests later. No need to be scared; if we follow the necessary steps, we are unlikely to screw it up. The beautiful color of the walls and the clean end result will be in front of us later. That’s why it’s worth taking the time to paint yourself, instead of calling professional painters or wallpaper installers.
Of course, there will be a need for some preparatory steps before we start painting. First, take out the furniture from the room or place them in the center where they won’t bother us coming and going. Plan the whole process, which will likely take more than just a few hours. If we are conscious and precise, we can even achieve a very aesthetic end result.
Preparations
Do I need to remove old paint before painting wall? In every case, assess the condition of the walls’ surface. If there are multiple layers from previous paintings, it is advisable to scrape and remove them. Prepare the wall for painting. Always start with the ceiling; remove dust from the surfaces. Cleanse the surfaces of dirt and stains with clean water. Be prepared that the preparatory work may take more time than the actual painting.
If there is wallpaper on the wall, it is crucial to ensure a smooth and clean surface before painting. Check the condition of the wallpaper and determine if it is smooth enough or if it needs to be removed. If it is in good condition, then painting over wallpaper is possible.
Smoothing is an important step before painting, as it allows you to fix various wall imperfections. While this may require some expertise, it is a process that can also be done at home. Pour water into a bucket and sprinkle the joint compound into it. The water should not entirely cover it, and just the top should be visible. The mixture’s consistency is appropriate when the compound is workable but still stays on an upside-down putty knife.
Priming and Painting
Start by painting the straight edges and wall intersections with a brush. It’s worth working together, possibly with others. Progress from top to bottom. Use a paint roller for priming. Pour the paint into two halves, splitting the bucket. Do not thin the paint unless specified by the manufacturer. Brush the corners and use a paint roller for larger surfaces. Avoid letting the paint drip during work, so use quick movements. You can repeat the painting in multiple layers, but wait for the previous layer to dry completely.
Of course, it may happen that the painting won’t be perfect, but there’s no need to worry about it. If we follow the instructions, work evenly and measuredly, we will achieve impressive results. Strive for the best performance we can deliver, and next time, we will become even more professional and experienced.
